(CMR) After residents were reportedly stopped from repairing the Colliers Dock in East End earlier this month, the Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing and Infrastructure has announced that members of the Public Works Department are currently undertaking repairs, with work scheduled to be completed next month.
Earlier this month, John McLean Jr. expressed on social media that a government department shut down a project he initiated to repair the dock. He posted:
“For 3 plus years now, the Colliers Public Beach Dock in my beautiful district of East End has not been usable due to damages from a passing storm. On many occasions, the powers that be were asked to repair [but] to no avail, so I took the initiative to repair it with the help of a local home depot and some of East End's finest carpenters.”
He further expressed that “considering Easter is right around the corner, the powers that be should have shown some common sense and allowed us to finish the project at no expense to our Government!”
The Colliers Dock sustained damage during Tropical Storm Grace. Structural assessments indicated several deficiencies, including the destruction of the trex deck, removal of some of the stockpiles from the foundation, and damaged cross bracing to split pile caps, the Ministry said.
Director of the Public Works Department Troy Whorms expressed that his team is working closely with other agencies to ensure adherence to environmental regulations while repairs are underway.
Last year, the Department conducted minor repairs to four docks across Grand Cayman, including Gun Bay, Coe-Wood Beach, Heritage Park, and Lobster Pot.
