(CMR) Orchid lovers island-wide can become immersed in beautiful blooms on exhibit at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park Orchid Show and Sale this weekend, March 25 and 26. Persons will also be able to purchase orchids at the fundraiser.
Botanic Park General Manager John Lawrus encourages visitors to enjoy a day at the park, stating:
“The Orchid Show is one of our annual events, which is an opportunity for the public to come out and experience not only the myriad of orchids on display, purchase an orchid for themselves or as a gift, and also to enjoy the natural beauty of the flora and fauna of the Botanic Park.”
Visitors to the show can discover the vibrant colors, delightful scents, and interesting backstories of rare and exotic orchids during this event. In addition to a beautiful display of orchids, the two-day show will also include a fundraising orchid sale, an orchid auction, food and informal talks to help educate orchid enthusiasts.
The Orchid Show and Sale is organized annually with the support of the Cayman Islands Orchid Society, whose membership is looking forward to another great year working alongside the staff of the Botanic Park.
“This event is one of the ongoing traditions which takes place at the Park and demonstrates the success of the consistent and dedicated partnership,” said TAB Director Patrick Thompson.
Mr. Thompson said the Tourism Attraction Board extends its gratitude and appreciation to the Orchid Society for the many years of support the Botanic Park has received to ensure the delivery of a successful event annually.
The exhibition, which showcases hundreds of orchids in bloom, comes from the collection of the Cayman Islands Orchid Society members, and many of the orchids on sale have been brought in from Jamaica and other vendors from Florida.
“The Orchid Society is pleased to present the Annual Orchid Show in collaboration with our partner, the QE II Botanic Park. We invite all orchid enthusiasts, the curious, the intuitive, and expert cultivators to join us in celebration of this very special and fascinating family of plants. We look forward to a wonderful show and the opportunity to share the joy of these special plants,” CIOS President, Hazel Brown, said.
However, Mr. Lawrus explained that this year’s show is set to be on the smaller side due to ongoing limitations with the importation process.
“But we are working hard on putting together a good show, and as usual, we anticipate it will be at the level our regular visitors and buyers have come to expect,” added Mr. Lawrus.
Proceeds from the fundraising sale go toward the continued development of the orchid boardwalk area at the Botanic Park.
The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park Orchid Show runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily and is included with special event admission rates of CI$10 for adults, children aged 6-12 – $5.00, and children aged 5 and under, free admission.
