(CMR) Premier of the Cayman Islands, Wayne Panton, said he intends to propose to fellow parliamentarians that Emancipation Day be returned to the Schedule of Public Holidays more than 60 years after it was removed.
Mr. Panton was speaking on Premier Access with Sandra Hill on Wednesday, 3 August. He said he was listening to the discussion about Emancipation Day a few days earlier on The Cold Hard Truth and realized there was renewed interest in having Emancipation Day as a public holiday.
“It's really an important part of our history that our children should be aware of…It's a part of our history that we should not ignore. It's a really important aspect,” he said.
It appears that Emancipation Day was first celebrated in Cayman on the 1st of August 1895. It remained on the Schedule of Public Holidays in the Cayman Islands until 1960 when it was last celebrated as a holiday. In 1961, it was removed to accommodate the introduction of a new holiday, Constitution Day. Constitution Day was introduced to the schedule that year to be observed on 4 July 1961.
