(CMR) Minds Inspired and local media houses are joining together to run a free, seven-day journalism and media summer camp for students ages 14 to 17 from 9 to 13 August with follow-up sessions on 17 and 20 August. The camp will take place at the Cayman Conference Centre in Elizabethan Square and run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
This industry-led summer camp is seeking to foster discernable media consumers and sow the seeds of interest in journalism and media, its practices and create awareness of the field.
During the sessions, students will learn what it takes to be an investigative journalist, visit local media houses for tours, behind the scenes and hands-on experience, learn to cover news for print, online and broadcast journalism and improve their writing, interviewing and storytelling skills. The students will show what they’ve learned on the final day by producing a news report that will be featured in local media.
The sessions of the camp will also help the students become more discerning consumers of information and be able to distinguish the different types of media, content (news, entertainment opinion, features, etc.) whilst being better informed to evaluate what they see, hear and read.
The camp is free, students must submit an application by 16 July which includes a story submission of their choice. For more information and details on how to apply, visit Minds Inspired Summer Camp. This camp is presented by Radio Cayman, Caymanian Times, Cayman Current, Loop Cayman, Cayman News Service, Cayman Compass, Cayman Marl Road and Camana Bay Times.
