(CMR) The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) will be stopping derelict vehicles from entering the George Town Landfill for the next two weeks as work is done to mitigate the risk of fires.
The Cayman Islands Fire Service (CIFS) handed back the landfill to the DEH on Monday, 29, after working over the weekend to ensure all fire was extinguished at the facility.
CIFS will still attend the site periodically to inspect and carry out temperature surveys and other safety measures.
To better mitigate the risk of fires, DEH will need to carry out further works and control measures. During this time, the landfill will not be accepting derelict vehicles until Monday, April 12.
Once all safety measures are in place, derelict vehicles will once again be accepted; however, DEH will be changing the days of accepting these vehicles to Monday to Friday only, from 7 am to 5 pm.
“As long as it is not a hazard to traffic or persons, we are asking the public to be patient while we complete these exercises, and it is safe to receive derelict vehicles at the George Town Landfill. We want to also thank the public for their continued safety practices when disposing of goods which can help us prevent fires,” said Michael Haworth, Assistant Director Solid Waste.
