(CMR) The Cayman Islands Regiment officially welcomed its second cohort of reservists with a Passing-out Parade on Sunday.
Fifty recruits were trained by a team that arrived from the UK in January.
“We now have over 100 people ready to support the islands in humanitarian and disaster relief should we need them,” Governor Martyn Roper wrote on Facebook Monday.
Governor Roper, who described the parade as a proud moment, said the Regiment is predominantly Caymanian with over 70% Caymanians and 25% residents. Three of Sunday’s recruits were from Cayman Brac.
“Yesterday was another landmark day as we build the Regiment up to full operational capacity. How it develops from here is up to the Premier, the Cabinet, and the people of the Cayman Islands, but I can reaffirm that the UK remains fully committed to continuing its capacity-building role,” Roper said.
“We can all be very proud of how it is developing and the opportunity it offers to our youth and people from all walks of life, both the private sector and public. That diversity is a real strength,” he added.
The governor said the UK had provided uniforms, kits, and two UK teams to deliver training. Seven junior officers were also sent to The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst for 2 months of officer training.
