(CMR) Approximately 15,000 doses of Pfizer vaccines arrived in the Cayman Islands on Thursday, the largest consignment so far.
The third batch of vaccines arrived on the British Airway Flight from the UK, Governor Martyn Roper announced.
“That’s a total of 38000 Pfizer doses supplied to us from the UK so far – a firm demonstration of the UK’s commitment to Cayman and the Overseas Territories. My office remains in discussion with the UK regarding further consignments of the Pfizer vaccine,” the governor said in a post on his Facebook page.
He said the vaccination program has been making good progress, with 15,543 doses of the vaccine administered so far. Of that number, 6,371 people have completed the two-dose course.
Governor Roper said, “I encourage you all to take your vaccine – both first and second doses- when invited to do so. It is increasingly evident they are very safe and effective. It is the best way to protect yourself and everyone in the community from serious illness.”
Meantime, Roper said the World Health Organisation (WHO) advisory committee on immunization has confirmed that the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine is effective and has recommended its use globally and for all age groups.
Recently, Roper said although the Cayman Islands has been receiving the Pfizer vaccine, the UK may eventually send the Oxford/AstraZeneca.
His reassurance of the vaccine's safety comes as there have been reports that South Africa had stopped using the vaccine; however, Roper said those reports are incorrect.
“This is welcome reassurance of the vital role that AstraZeneca, and the UK, continue to play in reducing the impact of the pandemic,” Roper said.
