(CMR) A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Croatia on Tuesday, killing at least six people and injuring many others.
The Weather Channel reported that the earthquake hit near Petrinja, Croatia, around 30 miles south of the country's capital of Zagreb, and was felt as far away as the neighboring countries of Serbia, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A 12-year-old girl was among those killed in the quake, which happened at about 12:20 pm local time (6:20 am ET).
Darinko Dumbović, the mayor of Petrinja, said the city was competed destroyed and called for emergency aid.
Croatia's Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic said in a tweet,
“We are doing everything we can to help the citizens of Petrinja and surrounding areas in this dramatic and tragic situation. The destructive earthquake has taken human lives, destroyed homes, and we deeply sympathize with every person and every family that has been harmed.”
Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said all emergency services were working tirelessly to provide aid to the affected areas. He tweeted,
“I'd like to express my condolences to the families of the victims of the earthquake in Petrinja and Glina. We hope that the number of victims will be as low as possible.”
President of the European Union Commission Ursula von der Leyen tweeted that the EU closely followed the situation and was ready to help.
Army barracks and nearby hotels were expected to help house people who had been displaced by the earthquake.
A 5.2 quake struck in the same area on Monday. In March, an earthquake of 5.3 magnitude hit Zagreb, causing one death and injuring 27 people.
