As a precautionary measure, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States has issued a worldwide recall of all liquid products under the brand names Major®, Rugby®, and Leader®, due to possible bacterial contamination of these products.
In response to the FDA recall released by the Public Health Department, the Health Services Authority (HSA) has identified Poly Vitamin ‘Baby’ Drops (multivitamins) as the only product being dispensed by the HSA that is impacted by the recall.
The HSA has removed all (Major®, Rugby®, and Leader® branded) supplies of Poly Vitamin ‘Baby’ Drops (multivitamins) purchased between January 1, 2017, and August 15, 2017, from its shelves. It is currently sourcing a new multivitamin for babies from reliable suppliers and expects to have a replacement product available within 7 – 10 days.
If you have received any (Major®, Rugby® and Leader® branded) Poly Vitamin Drops from the HSA, please stop using them immediately. For further safety, the Authority asks that you kindly drop off these products to the Pharmacy at the Cayman Islands Hospital or at your nearest district health center.
Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the HSA pharmacy at 244-2715/2716.
The same product was the subject of a recall in August 2016 due to possible product contamination with Burkholderia cepacia . Burkholderia cepacia is the name for a group or “complex” of bacteria that can be found in soil and water. B. cepacia bacteria are often resistant to common antibiotics.
The new recall was issued on August 3, 2017, and posted on the FDA website accordingly. For a full list of the products impacted by the recall click on the link below: https://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm571001.htm
