(CMR) Derek Haines will take on the 140-mile Grande Randonnée 70 trek through France next month to raise money for Meals on Wheels' new central hub. Through sponsorship for Derek and his nephew Tom Carlin, Meals on Wheels is looking to raise the $1.5M needed for the new hub.
A post from Governor Jane Owen stated that the planned facility will include space for meal preparation, volunteer training, and a welcoming social space where seniors can gather and socialize.
Haines, who runs marathons and takes on some of the world's toughest treks to stay in shape, has raised millions for various charities in the Cayman Islands over the years.
In 2014, Haines ran six marathons, raising US$1.3 million for a new care facility for Jasmine, formerly Cayman Hospice Care. In 2019, Haines and a friend raised nearly CI$800,000 for Inclusion Cayman.
In 2022, Haines and Mike Burcombe took on the challenging 200km GR20 Trek, known as the hardest in Europe, to raise funds for the non-profit after-school program Jubilate.
