(CMR) Five US military helicopters that drew the attention of people across Grand Cayman on Tuesday stopped for refueling, CMR has learned.
The two heavy-lift Chinooks and three Black Hawks stayed at the airport overnight and are expected to head to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, today. CMR understands the helicopters will be available to provide humanitarian assistance to Haiti.
Gangs have created havoc in Haiti, shutting down its international airport and forcing the US to evacuate embassy personnel using its military. The US also sent additional security to the embassy.
“At the request of the Department of State, the U.S. military conducted an operation to augment the security of the U.S. Embassy at Port-au-Prince, allow our Embassy mission operations to continue, and enable non-essential personnel to depart,” U.S. Southern Command said in a statement to USA TODAY.
No Haitians were evacuated on the aircraft used to remove US embassy personnel.
