70-year-old woman gives birth to twin in Uganda

(CMR) A 70-year-old woman in Uganda has given birth to twins after receiving fertility treatment, making her one of the world’s oldest new mothers.

Safina Namukwaya gave birth to a boy and a girl on Wednesday via cesarean section at Women's Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Uganda, the hospital announced in a statement on their Facebook page.

“She’s healthy. She’s talking. She’s walking around if they tell her to walk around the hospital,” a hospital spokesperson said.

Namukwaya had a daughter at the same facility in 2020 following IVF treatment. She is the oldest woman to deliver a baby at the hospital, whose proprietor is a prominent gynecologist in the East African region. The hospital specializes in helping couples who struggle to have children.

While many are celebrating this significant accomplishment, Namukwaya said she does not know what is next as the children's father has not been supportive

“Men don't like to hear that you are going to have more than one child. Even after I was admitted, my man never showed up,” she said in an interview which was translated.

When asked if she's ready to raise her babies and what comes next, she admitted, “I really don't know.”

“God is in charge. You see, you can have one child and feel overwhelmed. But here I am with twins at a time I am weak … I don't know, but they say every child comes with their blessings,” she added.
