(CMR) A teacher at the Prospect Primary School was reportedly removed from the institution for misconduct following an incident involving a student.
Details of the incident are not clear; however, CMR has been informed that Lisa Pearce, Year 1 and 2 assistant teacher, was the person removed from the school.
Pearce, who is from Jamaica, has taught in the Cayman Islands since 2017. According to her social media profile, she taught in Colombia before coming to the Cayman Islands.
Reports from the police are that shortly before 10 am, Monday, 4 September, police received a report of a common assault that was reported to have taken place at a primary school in
George Town, on Friday, 1 September.
The Department of Education Services (DES) said it was informed of an alleged case of misconduct by a staff member towards a student at the Prospect Primary School.
Upon receiving initial reports, the DES promptly referred the matter to the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) for investigation, adhering to the established protocol for addressing child protection allegations involving staff. The MASH team comprises professionals from the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and the Family Support Unit of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS).
DES Acting Director Elroy Bryan advised that the member of staff implicated in the alleged incident has been removed from the school pending the outcome of the appropriate investigations to ensure the welfare of the students at the school.
The Acting Director further commented, “We recognize and appreciate the concerns of parents, guardians, and the community and share their dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students.”
“We will continue to prioritize the welfare of students and maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any misconduct. Our educators are responsible for nurturing and educating our children, and we expect them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and care,” Mr Bryan said.
