(CMR) Jamaican Reggae artist Queen Ifrica (48) has accused her father, Derrick Morgan (83), of raping her as a young adult. She recalled the encounter during a live session on Instagram last week.
Queen Ifrica, whose real name is Ventrice Morgan, did a song about sexual abuse called “Daddy” but has never openly admitted it was about her own experiences.
In a live video last week, she explained that she had an estranged relationship with her father but reached out to him as an adult. She alleged that he raped her when she stayed with him one night, inspiring her advocacy for domestic abuse survivors.
Morgan has accused Ifrica of lying and said he would be taking legal action. He pointed to an interview she did regarding her song “Daddy”, in which she said it was not based on her own experience.
Ifrica said she tried to get her family to confront her father for years, but that it usually resulted in victim-blaming or her being labeled a liar.
“I’ve lived it and conquered it and survived it, so I can sit here and tell yuh seh you can overcome any darkness weh you go through inna yuh life. Don’t mek nobody revictimise you after dem rape you,” she stated.
Morgan's other children have come to his defense on social media, stating that Ifrica is lying. They said their father met her as an adult woman with children and that “he was already almost 100% blind with neurological issues that impaired his movements.”
Derrick Morgan is a Jamaican musician who was popular in the 1960s and 1970s. He worked with Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley, and Jimmy Cliff in the rhythm and blues and ska genres, and he also performed rocksteady and skinhead reggae.
