(CMR) A technical issue at UK air traffic control has led to hundreds of flights being canceled and others experiencing long delays with passengers stuck on planes and at airports. The issue has been fixed; however, flights are expected to continue being affected until the end of Monday.
Several UK airports have warned of delays and cancellations – as well as airlines including British Airways, Ryanair, EasyJet, Virgin Atlantic and Aer Lingus.
National Air Traffic Services told BBC it has “identified and remedied” the fault and is working with airlines and airports to get things back to normal. The issue with its flight planning system led it to bring in traffic restrictions to “maintain safety”.
According to BBC, more than 230 flights departing the U.K. were canceled Monday, as well as at least 271 that had been scheduled to arrive in the U.K.
“We have identified and remedied the technical issue affecting our flight planning system this morning. We are now working closely with airlines and airports to manage the flights affected as efficiently as possible,” Britain’s National Air Traffic Service said in a statement.
“Our engineers will be carefully monitoring the system’s performance as we return to normal operations.”
