(CMR) In recognition of his significant and sterling service to the Government and people of the Cayman Islands, Captain Eldon Kirkconnell will be accorded an official funeral by the Cayman Islands Government.
Captain Kirkconnell, OBE, JP, passed peacefully on Thursday, 8 June, at the age of 96.
He served in the Legislative Assembly and the Executive Council of the Cayman Islands from 1962 to 1972, and was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
A two-day period of national mourning to pay respects to Captain Kirkconnell will be observed from Thursday, 29 June, through Friday, 30 June. All Cayman Islands flags should be flown at half-mast during the period of national mourning.
The official ceremonial events that will be held in his honor include:
-A flag lowering ceremony, Government Administration Building, George Town, Grand Cayman – Thursday, 29 June, 9:00 a.m.
– Lying-in-State, House of Parliament, George Town, Grand Cayman – Friday, 30 June, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
-An official funeral service at Church of God Chapel, Walkers Road, George Town, Grand Cayman, on Saturday, 1 July at 3:00 pm.
Books of condolence are now available at the Government Administration Building and House of Parliament in Grand Cayman, District Administration in Cayman Brac, and the District Office in Little Cayman until close of business on Friday, 30 June.
Captain Kirkconnell was also a business pioneer, starting several local businesses, with Kirk Freeport the main highlight of his journey as a businessman.
