(CMR) Motorists who own Honda cars that have been recalled due to a defective airbag inflator can take their car to Carcity to have the issue addressed at no cost to them. As the authorized Honda dealer on island, the car does not have to be purchased from Carcity as they have been contracted by Honda to carry repairs.
The Honda Tacata airbag recall affects older vehicles from 1996 to 2016; these include Civics, CRVs, Accords, Honda Fits, among others. It is estimated that approximately 1000 vehicles that have not yet been fixed are in the Cayman Islands.
A Repair-A-Thon will be held from June 30 to July 31; however, persons can take their car to the dealer before.
Taylor Foster, general manager of Carcity, said the Tacata airbag recall is the largest recall in automotive history, with over 65 million vehicles affected across 11 brands.
He told CMR that there has been a Tacata recall since 2015, with Carcity changing over 15,500 airbags from 2016 to 2019. In 2019 during a recall campaign, over 1000 airbags were changed within days.
“The inflator which inflates the airbag is disintegrating under heat… When the airbag goes off, the shrapnel from the explosion can actually injure or even kill the passenger in the case of an accident,” Mr. Foster explained.
“This is not just for Carcity vehicles; this is anything with a Honda bag on it. We replace for the public for free,” he added.
The defective airbag inflator sometimes affects the driver's side, sometimes the passenger's side, and sometimes both, Foster explained.
Mr. Foster said some airbags previously changed have been recalled, so they have to be changed again.
Aled Chrishlow, service manager, said it is a severe situation and advise motorists driving Hondas to come to Carcity to ensure they are not affected.
