(CMR) In a move which has been questioned by many, the Miss Cayman Islands Committee has been granted the Miss Universe local franchise. Last month the Ministry of Tourism announced it would give up the franchise following controversy regarding the crowning of a contestant who faced criminal charges.
People are now questioning if this was a “real” transition since the committee has been granted the license. Questions are also being raised about whether the Government will continue to fund the organization despite relinquishing the franchise.
In a post on social media, Committee Chairperson Derri Lee, who has been appointed national director, said that the Committee is excited about this milestone and looks forward to continuing their work which started over 20 years ago, empowering and mentoring young ladies in the Cayman Islands.
The present members of the committee are unknown as several member of the previous committee had resigned. However, this committee has picked up where the Government left off.
According to a Facebook post, Derri Lee has been spearheading the restructuring of the Committee since the Ministry of Tourism’s announcement regarding the franchise. It also stated that there will be some exciting changes in a couple of weeks including the appointment of a new Chairperson which will be announced soon.
“The Committee is paramount to building strong lasting relationships with our sponsors and we have gained quite a number. We have worked hard to maintain our sponsors over the years and they understand our vision,” the post added.
“The Committee would like to thank in particular the Cayman Islands Government Ministry of Tourism for their tremendous support over the years. Thanks for believing in us. We are also thankful to the beautiful Chloe Powery-Doxey for all her hard work and dedication during this time as well as the continued support from the general public,” the post continued.
It further stated that the Committee acknowledges that the Cayman Islands is a conservative community and they will adhere to this culture.
Miss Universe Cayman also announced that the crowning for Chloe Powery-Doxey will be announced at a later date, the public are welcomed to attend.
