(CMR) Minister of Health Sabrina Turner has sought to clarify an incident of her not wearing a mask on a recent tour of the Little Cayman Clinic.
This clarification comes after the Cayman Compass carried a story highlighting that the minister was maskless on the tour. On Friday, 15 April, the Cayman Compass posted an article titled “Minister of Health goes mask-less in Little Cayman health centre tour” with a screenshot taken from video footage posted by CIGTV on its Daily News Brief of Tuesday 29 March.
In a release, the Ministry of Health pointed out that the current regulations with regards to healthcare facilities state that the healthcare facility “may require any person who visits any of such places to wear a mask and a person who refuses to do so shall be refused entry.”
However, according to the Ministry, the screenshot taken is of Minister Turner touring the facilities Tuesday 22 March at the end of the day, after the Little Cayman Clinic had closed. The visit was an impromptu stop to say thank you to the staff at a time when there were no patients or members of the public in the facility, the release stated.
“Without proper context, I understand how the photo in question may appear”, stated Minister Turner.
“In retrospect, I should have used my mask, regardless of the clinic being closed,” she added.
The Cayman Islands Government continues to encourage members of the public to follow public health guidelines including proper mask-wearing to control the rate of spreading the COVID-19 infection here in the Cayman Islands.
