“We appreciate the urgency of the Humane Society’s need for a purpose-built facility in a new location given the ongoing concerns about shelter capacity and flooding. Dart remains committed to helping the Cayman Islands Humane Society find a suitable location for a new home.”

(CMR) The Peppercorn lease that was extended by Dart to the Cayman Islands Humane Society is in jeopardy after it was revealed that the location may not be approved by Planning for the intended new, purpose-built facility.
This shocking development comes a few days after it was revealed that they had withdrawn an offer to the Cayman Rugby Football Union to lease land at Camana Bay for their new rugby club facility after a three-year lease negotiation process fell apart.
The offer was announced last year June when it was revealed that the Dart organization was donating two acres of land via a 99-year lease adjacent to the proposed rugby grounds to the south of the Cayman Islands National Gallery. The North Sound Road location was described as “one of the charity's biggest challenges” in most recent years. The Humane Society has been desperate to move from its current 22-year-old location due to ongoing overcrowding and flooding issues.
At the time, Dart Executive Vice President Pilar Bush responsible for community development said the site was chosen because of its' central location to visitors, volunteers, and proximity to veterinary services. However, it has now been revealed that the location is no longer going to be offered because the application “is unlikely to be successful.”
The original plan was for Dart to bear the cost of clearing and filling the two-acre site in preparation for the construction.
A Dart spokesperson shared that following meetings with neighboring residents and the Minister of Planning the application is not likely to be approved. In addition, they are now exploring additional alternative locations that may get approved.
Most recently, during Hurricane Delta, a shoutout for help fostering animals was posted on the society's Facebook page. Normally during a storm, they can expect flooding of the shelter's offices, quarantine room and kennels.
