(CMR) The RCIPS held a press conference late Tuesday, urging the public to provide any information they may have to help solve the murder of prison officer Harry Elliot.
Elliot was shot and killed shortly on Tuesday evening in what police theorize was a robbery gone wrong. The police said there was nothing to link his previous job to the tragic incident.
Speaking at the press conference, Commission Derek Bryne said that although the area is densely populated, there has been no witness cooperation so far. He urged people to come forward and tell the police what they know.
CCTV shows Elliot entering the premises at 8:02 pm and the robbers entering shortly after. At 8:08 pm, two males were seen running from the scene on Eastern Ave and School Road towards McField Square.
Commissioner Bryne asked people who were in the area around 8 pm to report anything they thought may be suspicious.
With 13 robberies so far this year, 10 of which were armed robberies, the RCIPS has a team of police officers committed to dealing with robberies, the commissioner also announced.
The police said they are seeing a trend of stolen cars being used in armed robberies and being left close to scenes while criminals leave by other means. The police believe a small group of persons is responsible for these robberies.
Meantime, the police have recovered three firearms so far this year; 6 firearms were recovered last year. Commissioner Bryne said the police continue to work to locate other illegal guns on the island.
Persons are asked to use confidential tip lines to let the police know about illegal weapons.
