(CMR) Concerned Cayman Brac residents are holding an urgent meeting this evening to discuss the recently CPA approved “air hanger” for the Dagarro Black Hawk project.
The public information meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. this evening at the Cayman Brac Beach Resort and there will also be a live watch party at Creperie's central terrace in Bayshore Mall on the waterfront. Some persons are traveling from Grand Cayman to Cayman Brac to show their support for the organizers there.
Residents have raised concerns that the turtle crawl in the West End of Cayman Brac be negatively impacted by the development of the proposed and now approved land. A social media post shared that turtle crawl would be “filled and covered in concrete” by the Daggaro developers.
This particular turtle crawl is said to be the best preserved in Cayman Brac and an important part of Cayman's ancestral history. Turtle crawls were how our ancestors kept turtles before refrigeration was available on the island.
Myles Newlove spoke to CMR on Monday's The Cold Hard Truth and explained that the facility will be a hanger storage facility. He also mentioned that there would be no drone activity at the location. However, a CIAA Extraordinary Board Meeting held remote on May 11 indicated that a drone proposal was being considered and discussions were taking place with the ministry.
Critics claim that Dagarro is being less than honest about the intended purpose of the project. However, for their park Dagarro indicted that before seeking CPA approval they explored and exhausted all other options on the island to finally settle on the best suited for their project. They also shared that they worked with the National Trust to address their concerns about any negative environmental impact.
Dagarro has not directly commented on the meeting scheduled for this evening.
Watch the interview: The company claimed that other media reports that they were building an “airbase” were incorrect.
It is uncertain what can be done at this stage given that the CPA has already approved the project.
