(CMR) In light of the recent spate of robberies across Grand Cayman, Premier Hon. Wayne Panton, and Governor Jane Owen convened a meeting with the Commissioner of Police Derek Byrne on Friday, 7 July, for him to brief Cabinet and elected members on plans to tackle the increased criminal activities.
“I want to reassure everyone that the safety and security of the people of the Cayman Islands remain the main priority of this Government. Like many of you, I was alarmed at the recent incidents of armed robberies in Grand Cayman, including those occurring last night,” Premier Panton said.
“The Government is resolute in restoring tranquility for everyone, including individuals, businesses, and the community,” he added.
Mr. Panton said the Commissioner has reassured the Government that the RCIPS has already activated plans to tackle the spate of robberies which resulted in four arrests this week as well as a second man being charged for involvement in the recent bank armed robbery.
Some of the steps that have already begun include the deployment of a task force dedicated to investigating leads and leveraging intelligence to apprehend suspects.
Steps taken also include targeted patrolling of high-risk areas, maintaining police presence on roads, and active community patrols.
The RCIPS is following leads in the recent incidents, and it is our hope that the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to justice, Premier Panton said.
“The Government reaffirmed its full support for both the RCIPS and Commissioner Byrne, who indicated they have the necessary resources at this time. However, the police cannot do this alone. The greatest tool the police have in solving crime is the cooperation from the community it serves,” the Premier continued.
He said it is incumbent on every resident to play their part as our police work to apprehend those responsible.
“Regrettably, we know it’s the actions of a few that have negatively impacted the well-being of our community. Please rest assured that the Government and your police service are resolute in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” he added.
Mr. Panton assured residents that crime will not be tolerated, nor will it become a norm.
“The police and the Government are taking a zero-tolerance approach. Need is never a justification to commit a crime, but where there is a need, I am proud to lead a caring Government that is heavily investing in social programs to support our people,” he stated
“Our Islands are known for its peaceful and crime-free environment; we cannot allow a handful of criminals to change our way of life and global reputation. Share what you know and help address this issue quickly,” Mr. Panton reiterated.
