(CMR) In light of the devastating news of the death of a security officer, in a suspected case of suicide earlier this week, a men's mental health group is encouraging males in Cayman to reach out to the group if they need help.
The private group on Facebook is called STRONG. The group's mission is to spread awareness of male mental health issues and share content, talks, research, and techniques people use to maintain STRONG mental health.
The group started by Gavin Kervill said it also aims to create awareness of the misdirection of masculinity and to create a community of support for anyone struggling.
Danilo Manilag, a well-liked and respected officer in the guarding division at The Security Centre Limited, was found dead early Monday behind the Bayshore Plaza. Mr. Manilag, a K-9 handler, was from the Philippines, and his family is seeking assistance in repatriating his body back home. CMR confirmed that employers are supposed to assist with such matters.
Mr. Kervill said, “the constraints of masculinity prevent many men from reaching out, which is why there are much higher suicide rates for men. It's an epidemic.”
STRONG provides an environment for men to interact and talk about the problems they face.
“I am not a counselor. But I am a Chinese Medicine acupuncturist/therapist with 10+ years of experience people's problems. I have read personal development and focused on health and wellness for the past 15 years. So I know what works for me and for others that I've worked with,” Mr. Kevill stated.
He said the group is directed at males because there needs to be something for men too. He encouraged me to talk, share, and ask for help.
Persons interested in becoming a part of the group can reach out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/438331777391778/.
