(CMR) Canton Chinese Restaurant located in the Strand on West Bay Road will be closing its door at the end of 2022, after 27 years of serving the people of the Cayman Islands and countless visitors to these islands.
CMR sources shared that it is closing due to “succession planning” and future management requirements. The Caymanian partners, the Fosters Group along with their restaurant partners will no longer be operating the business primarily because the active industry partners are getting up in age. The younger family members do not appear to be interested in continuing to be involved in the demanding restaurant industry.
The popular Asian restaurant specializing in Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine is a crowd favorite for many Sunday family dinners and business lunches over the years. Many Caymanians would have shared graduations and other celebratory dinners there.
It was partially gutted during Hurricane Ivan and saw a significant remodel after over 4 feet of seawater submerged the lower half of the restaurant. At the time the decision was made to renovate the popular restaurant and re-open it and let go of an American franchise, Outback Steakhouse which was located in the same plaza.
The restaurant had a small bar on the inside and many loved the freshly made “natural fruit punch: which was more akin to a fruit smoothie. Also, the lunch specials were always super affordable and included a soup.
CMR popped in on Wednesday for a last lunch of Peking Duck!
