(CMR) Local remittance services may be able to open on Monday, May 4 subject to complying with the COVID-19 operations plans that have been requested of them. During the daily press briefing, it was divulged that Cayman will start to phase into some sense of normalcy if the results continue to decline.
The long wait for the local operators could be open. It was previously revealed that they had not initially applied for exempted status and then CMR was informed by one of them that when they they were not granted the coveted status.
Today there were 200 test results with no new positive cases of the coronavirus. Money service businesses have been closed since the government shut down most of the country over a month ago. Since then the number one complaint has been the lack of access to sending and receiving funds overseas.
Cayman has several money services businesses including JN Services, Moneygram and Western Union. If given final approval the schedule would be as follows:
Monday to Saturday from 6 am to 6 pm as per the following alphabetized system:
Starting May 4, adults with last names beginning between A-K can go to the remittance service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Starting May 4, adults with last names beginning between L-Z can go to the remittance service on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
This will be subject to the presentation of an operational plan that shows effective risk mitigation strategies given COVID-19 physical distancing and sanitary measures. These need to be approved by the relevant authority.
“The operation of these services here are offered in a number of different ways,” It has been difficult to establish bespoke operations plans for physical distancing requirements to be met.”
