(CMR) Firefighter Ameilia Gillispie has broken the stigma of gender-specific roles in the Cayman Islands Fire Service by becoming the first female team member to achieve certification as an aviation in-house certified pump engineer.
“I am thrilled to share a significant milestone with you all: the successful completion of the rigorous CIFS in-house pump engineer training and certification,” Gillispie shared on social media, explaining that this achievement is pivotal in ensuring the efficient operation of our state-of-the-art aviation appliances.
Minister of Home Affairs Sabrina Turner, in congratulating Gillispie, said, “Her accomplishment is a powerful reminder that with passion and determination, barriers can be overcome. We take pride in celebrating her achievement, which serves as a testament to the belief that with passion, determination, training, and support, individuals can excel in any endeavor they choose”
Gillispie explained that throughout the course, she encountered real-world aviation-based scenarios involving pump operations, necessitating quick thinking in high-pressure situations and adept equipment troubleshooting.
“With the guidance of mentors and comprehensive training, I am proud to have attained the high standards required to safely and effectively operate the aviation striker foam tender trucks within the CIFS. This accomplishment fills me with immense pride, As I am now able to serve my community and team with confidence,” Gillispie stated.
“I extend my gratitude to the forward-thinking senior management team of the CIFS for their belief in my abilities and for providing me with the opportunity to contribute to the critical mission of our service in the capacity of a pump engineer. Moving forward, I am committed to upholding the highest standards of excellence in rescue and firefighting operations. I hope that my journey can inspire and pave the way for more women to pursue similar paths within the CIFS or any other organization they choose,” she added.
