(CMR) Russian-Canadian Anton Parygin, who pleaded not guilty to the illegal importation of three firearms into the Cayman Islands last year, is expected to be tried on 6 February in a judge-only trial.
The prosecution and defense will submit legal arguments relating to the charges on 23 January.
His lawyer, Ben Tonner, KC, intends to argue that, under the Firearms Act, Parygin was legally entitled to bring the weapons into the Cayman Islands, as he had declared the firearms to Customs officers upon his arrival and had advised them before his arrival.
Parygin arrived in the Cayman Islands on 28 January 2023 and brought in three firearms: a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, a 12-gauge shotgun, and a semiautomatic rifle with a 16-inch barrel.
He faces six counts of possession and importation and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
