LETTER TO THE EDITOR
(CMR) In the past month, our beloved community of the Cayman Islands has lost two precious teenage girls to suicide. These devastating events shed light on a growing crisis in our community that demands immediate attention accompanied by comprehensive action. The prioritization of youth’s mental health in the Cayman Islands is long overdue and is essential for fostering a healthy environment and a sustainable future. How many more must die?
These suicides serve as a stark reminder of the pressures and challenges that our youth face daily. From academic stress to digital stress, youth face modern challenges that our parents, teachers, and even our nation’s leaders may never understand. I believe that this crisis requires the implementation of a comprehensive mental health program in schools that offers counseling services and a safe space for youth to express themselves without fear of judgment or stigma. Something must be done! How many more must die?!
As a fellow youth, I encounter suicidal teenagers as often as weekly. My previous roles in the Youth Parliament, serving as an ambassador for the National Drug Council, and working with Leve Global to develop a new Youth and Sports policy have given me valuable experience advocating for youth. These experiences compel me to continue being a strong voice for our young generation. This silent epidemic has taken enough from our community, and if we do not act now, many more precious souls will be lost. How many more must die?
