(CMR) The owner of Wilbur, the dog who was found suffering in Prospect last year and later died, has been found guilty of animal cruelty.
Warlito Damasco Samelo Jr (48), a Filipino national, refused to attend his trial and was found guilty in his absence. He is accused of causing Wilbur unnecessary pain and suffering by failing to provide food, shelter, and veterinary care. He could face up to one year in prison for the offense.
Wilbur was found suffering due to a lack of care in Prospect last year. The dog died after undergoing weeks of treatment to try to save his life. Following the dog's death, there was a campaign for those responsible for the abuse of the animal to be brought to justice.
A petition has also been filed for the government to strengthen the Cayman Islands' animal protection laws to enable more effective prosecution of those who abuse animals.
The matter was tried in Samelo's absence after he reportedly told the court marshal he had to work when he was told he was required to attend court. When he appeared in court on Wednesday, he told the magistrate he had forgotten the court date.
Magistrate Philippa McFarlane said it was the worst case of animal cruelty she has seen. Wilbur, who was starved, also reportedly had heartworm and hookworm.
lnstead of taking the animal to the vet for his condition, the court heard that Samelo gave Wilbur medicine from the Philippines. The dog was rescued by a neighbor.
Samelo's work permit, which expired in March, has been extended as he awaits the outcome of the trial. He was released on bail and will return to court in six weeks for sentencing.
