(CMR) Magistrate Angelyn Hernandez has been appointed Chief Magistrate following the retirement of Chief Magistrate Valdis Foldats recently.
Chief Magistrate Valdis Foldats was appointed chief magistrate in 2021 but has been serving the Cayman Islands courts since 1999. He was the registrar of the Court of Appeal and Senior Deputy Clerk in the Cayman Islands from 1999-2001. He then served as Clerk of the Court from 2001 to 2011, also serving as acting Magistrate from 1996-2011.
Foldats was appointed a Magistrate of the Summary Court of the Cayman Islands in 2011 and became Chief Magistrate in 2021.
Magistrate Hernandez has experience in all divisions of the Courts, including the Court of Appeal, and has served as legal counsel with the Cayman Islands Attorney General’s Chambers.
From 1992 to 2007, she was instrumental in building a boutique litigation firm into a substantial practice and with a very strong corporate and commercial division. She specialized in corporate and commercial law and with a small family practice.
She was the sole practitioner from 2007 to 2014 with institutional and private clients, with her main practice areas being banking, Family, and Labor-related matters.
In February 2014, Hernandez was appointed an Acting Magistrate in the Summary Court. In December 2018, she was appointed as a permanent Magistrate.
