(CMR) Over two years after Cuban national Javier Jouz Varona caused a disturbance at the Government Administration Building and had to be removed by police, he appeared in Court on Thursday, 3 August, to answer to charges of disorderly conduct.
Varona, who was reportedly granted political asylum in the Cayman Islands, was charged after going to the Government building with his wife and child and boisterously demanding that they be assisted on 11 March 2021. He streamed his actions live, although he was not allowed to record inside the building.
“My baby is Caymanian, and I need help, and I need food; I need the government of this building to fix my business. I get fired; the government does not respect me,” he said, according to court documents.
He demanded that his family be assisted because they had attempted to leave the Cayman Islands but were taken back.
The police were called; however, Varona continued to cause a disturbance and had to be escorted from the building by police. After he was arrested, he reportedly told the police he behaved in that way to get help for his wife and daughter.
When he appeared in Summary Court on Thursday, Varona told the Court his previous lawyer advised him that the case was closed because the relevant authorities did not file the appropriate documents against him within the required six months. However, the Court revealed the appropriate documents were filed within the expected time.
He had previously appeared in Court on 12 October 2021 and was to reappear on 9 November 2021, but failed to show. A warrant was issued with a $200 cash bond, which he reportedly paid on 29 July.
Varona, who is to return to Court on 8 August, said he would be discussing the issues on social media.
