(CMR) Stephen Edwardo Ebanks, a man who has over 70 previous convictions, was sentenced to 12 months in prison on Wednesday for theft, handling stolen goods, possession of cocaine, and consumption of cocaine.
Last September, Ebanks was arrested for stealing a bicycle and committing several other offenses. During the arrest, he was found with cocaine in his possession.
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, with a 1/3 reduction to 12 months, and time in custody also to be taken into account.
In handing down the sentence for five offenses, Magistrate Philippa McFarlane considered that Ebanks was on bail while committing several offenses.
The Magistrate told Ebanks there was no escaping the fact that he had a poor record, with 74 previous offenses—many of which were dishonesty offenses.
She also noted that these offenses were committed over eight months and were mostly crimes of opportunity that did not necessarily involve much planning.
“You were clearly in the throws of you feeding your habit. The only appropriate sentence in your case is one of custody,” Magistrate McFarlane stated.
Ebanks was sentenced to four months for theft, three months for cocaine consumption, possession of a utensil, and handling stolen goods, and five months for theft and consumption of ganja. These sentences are to run concurrently; therefore, he received an overall sentence of five months.
He was also sentenced to six months in prison for theft, possession of cocaine, and consumption of cocaine.
