(CMR) On the advice of the Director General of the Cayman Islands National Weather Service and the Director of Hazard Management Cayman Islands, Acting Deputy Governor Eric Bush, in his capacity as Acting Chairman of the National Hazard Management Council, has placed the Cayman Islands under a Hurricane Alert as of 8 pm tonight, 30 June 2024.
The alert signifies that a hurricane poses a potential threat within the next 48-72 hours. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, stay informed through official government channels, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The National Hurricane Centre based in Miami has advised that Hurricane Beryl is expected to remain an extremely dangerous Category 4 when it reaches the Windward Islands later tonight or Monday morning.
“As we face the potential impact of Hurricane Beryl, it is imperative that our community gets prepared. I urge everyone to take the necessary steps and to get ready for what may be the first hurricane of the season to impact our Cayman Islands. Speak with your family and friends, make a plan together, and stay informed,” Eric Bush, Acting Deputy Governor, stated.
What to Expect During a Hurricane Alert
During a Hurricane Alert, it is crucial for residents to stay informed, vigilant, and prepared. HMCI, in collaboration with the National Weather Service (CINWS), is closely monitoring the hurricane's trajectory and will provide updates as the situation evolves. The alert period is critical for residents to finalize their preparedness plans, secure their properties, and ensure they have the necessary supplies.
Do Not Panic
“As Hurricane Beryl makes its way through the Eastern Caribbean, the safety and well-being of our residents are paramount. We are actively monitoring the situation and taking all necessary precautions to protect our communities. I strongly encourage everyone to stay informed and adhere to the safety guidelines provided by our emergency services,” shared Hon. Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly.
On Sunday, Premier O’Connor-Connolly convened an emergency Caucus meeting to discuss preparations for Hurricane Beryl's possible arrival. The meeting focused on coordinating efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of Cayman Islands residents and visitors in anticipation of the hurricane's potential impact.
During the meeting, the latest updates from the National Weather Service were reviewed to understand the potential risks and impact areas.
To ensure readiness, an emergency response plan, including strategies for emergency response and resource allocation, was also discussed.
Efforts to coordinate with local agencies and emergency services were emphasized to streamline response. A comprehensive communication plan was also developed to provide timely advisories and instructions to the public.
Premier O’Connor-Conolly emphasized the importance of prompt and decisive action to safeguard the community. All caucus members actively participated, bringing their concerns and recommendations to the planning and decision-making process.
It took Beryl only 42 hours to strengthen from a tropical depression to a major hurricane — a feat accomplished only six times in Atlantic hurricane history, but not this early in the season. Beryl is the first Category 4 hurricane to form this early in the Atlantic.
The National Hazard Management Executive will meet on Monday morning, 1 July, to review the status of preparedness efforts on all three islands. Following the meeting, the public will receive an update on recommendations for getting ready, public safety measures, and the next steps.
Key Preparedness Tips
1. Stay Informed: Regularly check official government channels, such as the National Weather Service, HMCI, CIG, and local news outlets for the latest updates and instructions.
2. Emergency Kit: Assemble an emergency kit that includes water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, batteries, flashlights, and other essential items.
3. Secure Property: Bring outdoor furniture, decorations, and garbage cans inside. Secure windows and doors with shutters or plywood.
4. Evacuation Plan: Familiarise yourself with local evacuation routes and plan where you will go if an evacuation order is issued.
5. Communicate: Stay in contact with family and friends. Let them know your plans and ensure everyone in your household knows the emergency plan.
6. Fuel and Power: If possible, ensure your vehicles are fully fuelled and have backup power sources, such as generators.
7. Download the NENS App: Register on www.nens.gov.ky and download the app to receive alerts.
Remain Vigilant
Residents are reminded to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by the government and HMCI. It is essential to heed advisories promptly and avoid taking unnecessary risks.
“We are committed to the safety of our community and your cooperation is vital in ensuring everyone's well-being,” shared Dani Coleman, HMCI Director.
Residents are urged to take this alert seriously and to prepare accordingly.
“We understand that the prospect of a hurricane can be unsettling, but rest assured that we are committed to providing the necessary support and resources to ensure the safety and protection of our residents. Together, we can navigate the potential threat and emerge stronger,” a release from the Government on Sunday stated.
Residents are encouraged to monitor this system's progress closely and are advised to begin taking stock of their hurricane preparedness.
