(CMR) A disturbance in the Atlantic is expected to form a tropical depression or storm over the coming days, which could threaten the Caribbean. While the Cayman Islands is not immediately threatened, the public is being urged to be vigilant.
According to the US National Hurricane Center, the low-pressure system located about 1500 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands is gradually becoming better defined. Showers and thunderstorms are also showing signs of organization, and a tropical depression or tropical storm will likely form later today or on Saturday.
This system is expected to move westward at 15 to 20 mph and approach the Lesser Antilles by the end of the weekend.
A tropical wave centered several hundred miles south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands is also producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Some slow development of this system is possible next week while it moves generally westward across the central.
The Cayman Islands Weather Service (CINWS) says the AL95 weather system does not pose an immediate threat to the Cayman Islands, and any updates will be shared via official channels and media.
Hazard Management Cayman Islands (HMCI) and the Cayman Islands National Weather Service are urging the public to remain vigilant this hurricane season.
The Cayman Islands are currently experiencing rainy weather conditions associated with a broad area of low pressure located several hundred miles southwest of Grand Cayman. This area of low pressure is moving west-northwest toward the Yucatan Peninsula and poses no significant threat. However, we can expect widespread shower and thunderstorm activity influencing local weather conditions in the Western Caribbean Sea.
Although the Cayman Islands is not currently threatened by AL95, residents are encouraged to be prepared and stay informed. Information on storm preparedness can be found on the HMCI Hurricane page. Additional tips and reminders can be found on their Facebook and Instagram pages.
“I would like to remind everyone to be prepared at all times during what’s predicted to be a very active hurricane season and to follow the official channels for accurate weather updates.” shared Dani Coleman, Director of HMCI, during an internal briefing.
To be prepared, remember to:
1. Monitor Weather Reports
