(CMR) Tropical storm Zeta is expected to strengthen into a hurricane later on today (October 26), the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.
According to the latest information from the NHC, the storm is now is located about 210 miles (340 km) southeast of Cozumel, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 70 miles (110 km) per hour.
The NHC said Zeta could bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to Mexico, the Cayman Islands and parts of Cuba, before drenching the central US Gulf coast.
The storm is expected to make landfall near Louisiana.
A hurricane warning is in effect for Tulum to Dzilam and Cozumel in Mexico while a tropical storm warning remains in effect for Pinar del Rio, Cuba, South of Tulum to Punta Allen and West of Dzilam to Progreso.
Zeta is the 27th named storm of the hurricane season which could become the most active on record with another month remaining until the November 30 end-date.
The increase in named storms is said to be attributed to human-induced climate change.
The world’s oceans continue to warm at a fast rate, which means hurricanes are more likely.
