Cayman Marl Road has discovered that “Sarah Jane” featured in a viral YouTube video is Sarah Waddell who was seeking money for medical care in Vietnam just 4 months ago.
The waitress was interviewed in a recent YouTube video that has spurred an island-wide discussion on social media and local talk shows about ex-pat employment in the Cayman Islands. In her interview, uploaded April 2017, she commented that it was easy to obtain employment in the Cayman Islands with no experience and via a Skype interview.
She also bragged about having saved so much money that she could travel to Asia after working for just 1 year in Grand Cayman. She worked at a restaurant name Craft, on West Bay Road.
In an ironic twist, we have now discovered that she contracted a deadly e coli infection during her travels and was in septic shock. She was put in a medically induced coma and needed life support breathing machines.
The online fund “Bring Sarah Home” was originally started to raise $10,000 – but as of today, it had already topped $15,219.
The Go Fund Me account was started by her friend, Susan Lee who wrote: “This nightmare began June 2nd when Sarah Waddell and friend Tomasz, were traveling through Vietnam.
“Sarah became very ill. By the morning, it was very severe. She went to the hospital and Sarah was admitted immediately and was then discovered that Sarah was in septic shock and it was life-threatening. She was then put on life support breathing machine put into induced coma and incubation.” “The septic shock turned out to be e-coli and at that time damaged her heart. She has now had the breathing machines removed, thank god for miracles.
Ms. Lee added:” Sarah is still in ICU and critical as of June 9th. Doctors are doing everything in their power to save Sarah’s life. At the time of admittance, friend Tomasz had to use his funds to ensure Sarah all the proper medical required.
“Family members had to catch flights to Bangkok Thailand, get visas then fly to Vietnam to be able to make health decisions for Sarah. Unfortunately, Mother Marilyn Breckon was unable to emergency fly, due to bone cancer. Please help these families and please pray for Sarah.”
The last update was posted 2 months ago and stated:
Hello, Sarah here!
Today marks two months since I was admitted into the hospital in Vietnam. Currently I am going to regular doctors appointments in regards to my heart, and how to continue to stay healthy. In the near future I will have a heart monitor to make sure there is no current or future damage. I wanted to reach out to you one last time to thank you for all your donations and support. All of you made it possible for my family to fly to Vietnam to be with me and support me through that traumatic time. I cant express my appreciation enough. Thank you 1000 times over! Much love, Sarah
Waddell, from Waterdown, Ontario, Canada, worked at Craft Food and Beverage and left Cayman to travel around South East Asia with a friend. She has since returned to Canada and based on the updates has made a full recovery.
