(CMR) A former employee of Puritan Cleaners (1980) Limited whose hand was crushed while on the job three years ago has filed a lawsuit against the dry cleaning company. Mary Albarado is claiming she suffered personal injury, loss, or damage as a result of negligence by Puritan.
Albarado, who was 44 years old at the time of the incident, was reportedly carrying out her assigned task of cleaning and preparing the roller press machine at Puritan's Eastern Avenue location on June 21, 2018, when a cloth napkin in Albarado's left hand became engaged with the roller press. The machine pulled her left hand and caused it to become engaged with the machine causing significant injury to her left wrist.
Albarado, who was employed with Puritan Cleaners since 2014, was transported by a coworker to the George Town Hospital, where she received emergency medical treatment. She underwent emergency surgery on June 26, 2018; this involved a skin graft from her left groin.
She is now suing Puritan Cleaners for negligence. According to court documents, Puritan, their servants, employees, or agents were negligent in failing to provide safety gear or protective equipment. The documents also claimed that Puritan failed to maintain the roller press machine in an effective, safe state of repair and failed to implement appropriate safety measures to avoid or reduce the risk of injury to the plaintiff.
The plaintiff also claimed that Puritan failed to sufficiently assess the risk associated with the task to which the plaintiff was assigned and to maintain a safe workplace.
The injuries sustained included crush injury over the dorsum, tendon injury, skin loss and lesion over the fourth metacarpophalangeal joint, partial degloving of the left hand, along with swelling, scarring, and trauma to the left hand.
Albarado is claiming to have suffered loss and incurred expenses as a result of the incident. Details of the loss, including past and future claims of medical treatment, loss of earnings, and travel, will be supplied later, court documents indicated. She is being represented by KSG Attorneys-At-Law.
