(CMR) Vincentians are being warned to prepare for evacuation following reports of increased activity at the La Soufriere volcano.
An orange alert has been issued, with residents told to prepare to evacuate at short notice, should such an order be given.
The orange alert issued is the third highest on the four-colour scheme, with the volcano described as having entered an “effusive eruption stage”.
“At relatively short notice, you may get – may get an order to evacuate if in fact we get the scientific information that an explosive eruption will be occurring or at least the likelihood,” Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves told citizens in the area.
Saint Lucia’s National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) said in a statement Tuesday that it had been in contact with the UWI Seismic Research Centre and has knowledge of and is monitoring the activity at the La Soufriere Volcano.
“As the situation unfolds NEMO will provide updates and advisories to the public,” NEMO said in statement.
