(CMR) US President Donald Trump has deployed special law enforcement teams to protect national monuments ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend.
The Department of Homeland Security made the announcement on Wednesday (July 1) though details on the matter remained vague, including how such law enforcement officers would respond to perceived threats.
An executive order signed by the President last week on memorials created a task force of law enforcement agencies that are expected to analyze and manage the potential for civil unrest or destruction of federal monuments.
“While the department respects every American’s right to protest peacefully, violence and civil unrest will not be tolerated,” Acting Secretary Chad Wolf said in the announcement.
Following the killing of 46-year-old George Floyd, protestors have taken to the street of major US cities and have been taking down monuments considered to be racist.
