(CMR) A tropical storm warning remains in effect for the Cayman Islands as Tropical Storm Delta intensifies in the Caribbean Sea.
According to forecasters, TS Delta could brush or strike the Cayman Islands and western Cuba by Tuesday, moving on to on U.S. Gulf Coast by late this week.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center.
Strong winds and heavy rain are expected across portions of Jamaica, Cuba and the Cayman Islands during the next few days.
Forecasters also anticipate a storm surge will raise water levels by as much as 2 to 4 feet above normal tide levels along the southern coast of western Cuba and on the Isle of Youth.
Delta is moving toward the west near 7 mph (11 km/h), and a turn toward the west-northwest is forecast later today.
A faster north westward motion is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On the forecast track, the center of Delta is expected to move away from Jamaica later today, move near or over the Cayman Islands early Tuesday, and approach western Cuba and the Yucatan Channel Tuesday afternoon or evening.
