(CMR) With more and more Caymanians heading to the United Kingdom for greener pastures CMR came across a growing trend – sex-for-rent arrangements. Giving new meaning to the term “friends with benefits” (FWB).
With the high cost of living all over the world, many persons are having to turn to non-traditional means of paying for their accommodations. In a rather revealing expose many are being warned that the perceived benefits are simply not worth the risks.
A recent YouGov poll suggested 250,000 women in the UK had been offered free or reduced rent in exchange for sexual favors in the past five years. In many cases, young university students are the most vulnerable. The manipulative landlords are often found via online advert sites like Craigslist.
The recent YouGov survey, commissioned by homelessness charity Shelter, found 140,000 prospective female tenants had been propositioned by landlords in the past year alone.
Justice Minister Edward Argar said the practice was “unacceptable” and work was on-going to tackle it.
He said the “preying on vulnerable people seeking affordable accommodation” was already a criminal offense.
“The decision of whether to prosecute rests entirely with the CPS.”
