(CMR) Travelers continue to be the primary source of COVID-19 infections in the Cayman Islands as it was confirmed today that four more were tested positive. There are 12 active cases.
Concerns have been raised by citizens about how Cayman Airways employees are being protected from possible exposure as travelers come into the Cayman Islands. Some have indicated that CAL staff are not going into isolation and they worry that they may be the most at risk at introducing it into the local community.
Cayman Airways was in Miami yesterday and had incoming passengers from Jamaica today. British Airways went into a serious shutdown earlier this week after they have seen new record numbers going into flu season. They are planning a repatriation trip in Honduras next week. The virus is surging in the USA, UK and Jamaica.
Travelers who are participating in the self-isolation program are also permitted to take their own taxi home. Government escorts are not taking them as had been the practice for the government facilities.
The Chief Medical Officer, Dr John Lee, reports 463 COVID-19 tests have been carried out since this was last reported on Tuesday, 13 October. Four were positive.
The four individuals are travellers who tested positive as part of routine screening and will remain in isolation until they have recovered. One of the individuals has mild symptoms of a respiratory infection.
Of these and other travellers, high viral counts are now being seen which have not been evident on island for many months.
Another traveller in isolation who had previously tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 has now also developed mild symptoms.
The patient admitted to the HSA remains on a ventilator.
The total number of people in isolation, either at a government facility or in their homes as required by the Medical Officer of Health, will be provided shortly.
