(CMR) The creator of cartoon classics like Tom & Jerry and Popeye, Gene Deitch, has died. Deitch died last Thursday night at his apartment in Prague, Czech Republic at the age of 95.
The news was confirmed by his publisher Petr Himmel.
Deitch's won an Academy Award for Best Animated in the 1960s. He also was nominated for the same award twice in 1964 for Here's Nudnik and How to Avoid Friendship.
In 2004, he received the Winsor McCay Award for his lifelong contribution to animation.
