(CMR) Tropical Storm Laura is forecast to move west-northwest over Cuba leading to increased rainfall for the Cayman Islands beginning tonight. The Cayman Islands National Weather Service is forecasting thunder and heavy rainfall continuing through Monday and this could lead to localized flooding in low lying areas. Fresh, gusty winds are also expected mainly over the Sister Islands.
Tropical Storm Laura is moving across Hispaniola Sunday on its march to follow Marco into the Gulf of Mexico and toward the Gulf coast.
Laura is bringing torrential rain over Haiti and portions of the Dominican Republic.
Laura continues to move west-northwest at 21 mph and this motion is expected for the next few days.
It will gradually intensify as it moves over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico late Monday night and could intensify into a Category 2 hurricane. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph with higher gusts.
Strengthening is forecast once Laura moves into the Gulf of Mexico on Monday night and Tuesday.
A storm surge warning has been issued from Morgan City, Louisiana to Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
A Hurricane Warning has been issued for the coast of Louisiana from Morgan City to the Mouth of the Pearl River.
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Mississippi/Alabama border to the Alabama/Florida border.
A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the Southshore of Louisiana from Sunday night until Tuesday morning. Rainfall totals could exceed 6″ in some areas, causing flooding.
