(CMR) Residents in South Sound are pleading with dog owners to be responsible pet owners and not allow their dogs to roam freely after several cats have been mauled to death.

One cat was euthanized this morning after another attack in the area and several cats have gone missing; presumably killed by this rogue dogs. One owner said that dog owners need to take care and walk their dogs on a leash instead of allowing them to roam freely. One area of significant concern is South Palms.

So far two tan colored dogs medium build dogs have been identified as possible culprits.

Social media posters also shared that there are several additional hotbed areas of concern including Newlands, Snug Harbour, Beach Bay, West Bay and even Bodden Town.

Owners should be reminded that under the Animals Law (2013 Revision) it is an offense to allow a dog to roam free without being on a lead and wearing a collar.

26. Every person keeping a dog shall ensure that such dog while in any highway or other public place is on a lead and is wearing a collar with an identification tag bearing licence number attached thereto.

In addition, section 40 makes it clear that a criminal offense is committed:

40. (1) If a dog is dangerously out of control in a public place, the owner and, if different, the person for the time being in charge of the dog, commit an offense.

Upon summary conviction one is liable to imprisonment for six months and to a fine of four thousand dollars and upwards.
