(CBC) The standoff between Cuban nationals and the Cayman Islands officials remains at an impasse this afternoon.
CMR sources have shared that the Panamanian vessels does not want the migrants on board and are now losing significant money. The owner of the vessel had shared he is now losing significant money because of the delay.
The crew on board are Filipino and slightly outnumbered by the migrants. There are also allegations that they migrants are prepared to take drastic actions in order to attain their goal which is to go to America.
The Customs and Border Control Service (CBC) acknowledges the situation with the migrants who are refusing to disembark the vessel, Bulk Freedom. CBC can confirm that there are ten adult males, two adult females and one infant female remaining on board.
CBC can confirm that one male migrant voluntarily disembarked the vessel and has been transported to the Holiday Inn quarantine facility. No medical issues have been reported.
The situation is managed by CBC with the assistance of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) and the Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG).
CBC would like to emphatically state all efforts are being made to accommodate the safety of those on board and the Cayman Islands Government continues to provide care in accordance with the 1951 Refugee Convention and that approach will continue.
