(CMR) Presently two inbound flights are unable to land and several outbound flights are delayed because the privately owned tour guide helicopter is stuck on the runway and emergency personnel are currently on the runway.
We can confirm that outbound flight KX792 to New York is currently delayed. Also inbound KX201 from Tampa and BA253 from Nassau, Bahamas are both circulating the airport at this time.
We understand that the helicopter had to do an emergency landing and the cause of the issue is mechanical and the back propeller is impacted. They attempted to land 3 times at the airport and were finally successful on the forth time. They also attempted o land at the land pad in George Town waterfront unsuccessfully.
We understand there were two adults and two children on the flight. A 10-year-old child was being treated for his birthday. Passenger on board shared with us:
“It was terrifying. I was with my husband and 2 kids. My son’s 10th bday present. He’ll never forget it!”
Despite it being a scary experience she is grateful to the pilot:
“I have to say that the pilot landed us safely and soundly. He kept us safe. And I am thankful.”
This is a developing story and more information will be posted once available.
5:00 pm UPDATE: Both BA and KX flights have now landed and taken off.
