(CMR) Straight Talk evening talk show on local radio station Star 92.7 FM will be getting a new host on Monday after Ruthanna Young's departure. Author and former political candidate Catherine Tyson will be taking over as host for the hour-long drive time talk show.
Tyson joined Young on this evening's show to do a formal interview and hand over.
The talk show originally started by Prospect MLA, Austin Harris after he left Rooster 101.9's CrossTalk in 2015. Originally coined “Straight Talk with Austin Harris” Young took over the reins after Harris resigned to run for political office in March 2017. Young has previously co-hosted a morning show with Jeanna Williams called Girl Talk.
Ironically all three women have some political aspirations with Tyson having run in George Town South as an independent candidate in 2017. Williams just declared her candidacy for Savannah and rumors abound that Young may be considering a political career as well. However, for the time being, Young noted that she will be focusing on her family and her real estate career sharing:
“Three and a half years ago I very unexpectedly started my journey as the newest host of Straight Talk on Star 92.7FM. It is a position that I felt privileged to hold as so many listeners entrust you to speak on their behalf often times trusting you with the most private of information about their lives. A trust that was always so humbling. I have now made the decision to step down as your host and hand over the mic as I find it necessary to dedicate more time to my family and Real Estate career. A bittersweet moment indeed. However, I will continue, as I always, to be ever-present in this community.”
Tyson has previously guest-hosted on Radio Cayman and her LinkedIn account describes her as a “trainer, speaker, human services specialist and media personality”. She also had her own half-hour “high energy entertainment show” on Cayman 27. She was managing director of The Cayman Reporter for a short time and was a columnist for that publication as well as The Caymanian Times. She also worked briefly for the University of the West Indies Open Campus as the local administrative assistance and Cayman representative.
In 2017 she was the first candidate to announce she would be running for GTS. Rumors are in wide circulation that she intends to return to the political arena closer to election time in 2021.
Tyson is the mother of three children and her daughter Caitlin Tyson won the Miss Cayman Islands pageant in 2018.
Straight Talk airs Monday thru Thursday from 5 pm until 6 pm on Star 92.7 FM
