(CMR) RUMOR: The rumor is about 29-year-old Nordia Markland who committed suicide on Wednesday at her home in on Shannon Lloyd Crescent in Clarendon. A voice note, photograph and video are circulating of the young Jamaican lady.
The rumor claims she lived in the Cayman Islands and worked at a local bar and that she committed suicide because she was HIV positive. It further stated that anyone who had relations with her should be concerned. It was accompanied by a 37-second voice note that claimed she was promiscuous and did not use protection. Today, it was also alleged she was 6-months pregnant.
FALSE:
There is no evidence that she lived, worked or visited the Cayman Islands. Whilst it's a possibility she could have entered on fake papers no one has actually confirmed locally that they know her; making this highly unlikely. That part of the story is NOT true based on the research options we have available to us.
The local bar owner mentioned in the viral post also confirmed this person was never employed at that establishment.
Furthermore, the story made the media in Jamaica after the video was largely circulated. It was reported that her sister, Petergaye, was asking people to be sensitive and desist from sharing the video any further. In an hour-long Facebook Live post, she charged that people should have used the time to ensure that her sister's children were taken care of because of the emotional trauma that they are enduring.
“On top of it yuh there cussing her how she a wicked coolie gyal. No one take in consideration seh the same video yuh a mek you a go send it out and it a go circulate and it's gonna come back to her children, 12 years from now, 20 years from now?” she said. “Why unuh never tek the pickney dem and carry dem to unuh house and talk to dem? Why unuh couldn’t call CDA and get somebody to counsel fi dem.”
She said that her sister was depressed because after the death of her father, she had to bury a cousin shortly after. Petergaye said that as a person who went through depression as well, she said that people are too quick to criticize and lack love.
She thanked those who sent their prayers and love, and said that people should not be quick to judge because they were not aware of what her sister was going through.
In her post, Petergaye mentioned that the rumours about why Markland took her life are not true and people should know the facts before they start talking.
She asked people to continue praying for her family as they took this time to grieve. She said the constant sharing of the video is not helping the family heal. In a subsequent interview with the Jamaican media she flatly denied that her sister had HIV/AIDS.
Markland was found dead last Saturday at around 4 a.m. at her home on Shannon Lloyd Crescent in Clarendon. No foul play is suspected.
NOTE: CMR has decided not to share the video of her body hanging at her home despite the fact that it has been widely circulated on social media.
